Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Pennsylvania State University, 1999.
Henry David Thoreau (1817--1862) spoke of simplicity as an ideal in life, encouraging his readers to reduce rather than accumulate. While simplicity is not a ideal unique to Thoreau, his writings provide illumination for contemporary society, one that struggles with materialism, commercialism, and consumerism. This need for simplicity resonates with coaches as well. The purpose of this study is to examine Thoreau's conception of simplicity, and further to provide coaching applications through the exemplification of simplicity.

Thoreau, perhaps most well known for his sojourn at Walden Pond, spent the bulk of his life writing. His practical transcendentalism, influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson, focused on themes of living well, finding one's own way, and also simplicity. Thoreau spoke of simplicity as a chosen poverty, a means to remove the trifles of life in order to experience "higher living." This process of simplicity involved both crystallization and transcendence.

Simplicity is similar to three themes within the field of sport philosophy which are play, flow, and Zen movement. Play is freely chosen activity, autotelic in nature, and is conducted in a prerational fashion. Flow, the quality of optimal performance, involves elements of challenge, outward focus, and absorption. Zen movement, the unique method of training the body-mind, enables practitioners to achieve uncluttered thinking, focused attention, and clarity.

Simplicity has important implications for coaches in their attitudes toward sport, and for sport itself. The simple life holds promise for coaches burdened by a quest for more, overwhelming responsibilities, and numerous distractions. Simplicity also holds promise for sport itself, an institution powerfully dominated by the belief that "winning is everything." Sport modeled with simplicity in mind would focus on two approaches: by emphasizing the process, and by emphasizing the giving.

In conclusion, two additional methods of examining simplicity are using journal form and observing coaching exemplars. The journal form in this case captures the lived experience of a coach struggling to implement simplicity. Three coaching exemplars represent the qualities of simplicity in their coaching, removing distractions and attaining focus.
