Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Central Florida, 2003.
The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of employers regarding how prepared high school graduates in central Florida are for entry into the workforce. The study further identified perceived current strengths and weaknesses of recent high school graduates who entered directly into the workforce without further college or technical training. The following four questions guided the research in this study: (1) How do the perceived job skills of the graduates compare to the necessary job skills outlined in the SCANS report? (2) What are the strengths and weaknesses of central Florida high school graduates, as perceived by the employers? (3) Are recent central Florida high school graduates prepared to successfully enter directly into the workforce, as perceived by their employers? (4) What are the employers' perceptions of the roles and effectiveness of the local high schools in preparing graduates for the workforce?

Analysis of the survey responses indicated that being able to use critical thinking correlated with 10 of the 17 SCANS skills. Critical thinking was the SCANS skill that was perceived to be the most deficient skill of the recent high school graduates entering the workforce. SCANS skills grouped by personal traits were perceived to be the strongest skills of the entry-level workers.
