The literature regarding professional certification suggests that there are many advantages and many beneficiaries; however, the supportive argument often is based upon opinions. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived benefits of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification program to employers, employees and other beneficiaries as viewed by employers. The research questions were: (1) How do employers in the automotive service industry use ASE certification as a criteria in their present and future hiring, promoting, evaluating, and assigning of responsibilities practices/policies? (2) What do employers consider to be the major benefits of ASE certification to employers, employees and other beneficiaries? (3) What methods of encouragement do employers in the automotive service industry use to motivate their employees to develop industry standard skills and knowledge to be ASE certification?

Descriptive survey methodology was used. The target population included 1200 employers. A random sample of 288 employers was selected. The questionnaire was designed using experts to ensure validity. A total response of 178 (61.8%) was received from two mailings. A non-respondent follow up was conducted and showed no significant difference. A Cronbach's alpha of.97 was obtained for scaled items.

Consistent with the popular belief, certification held the greatest support as increasing the opportunity to compete in the job market, recognition of the automotive service business among consumers, credibility of the profession, marketing business to consumers, the self esteem of employees, technicians technical currency, prestige of employees and chance of hiring qualified practitioners. Study findings give minimal support to some ASE certification benefits: increasing creativity of employees, reducing employee turnover, protecting employers from the incompetent practitioners, evaluating employee job performance, reducing cost of training, stabilizing job security, and increasing employee work effectiveness.
