The production of particles with carboxyl groups on the surface ranging from 1.35 to 15.70 mum in diameter were synthesized using a one step dispersion polymerization of styrene, acrylic acid and butyl methacrylate. We studied the effect of the concentration of AA, BMA and water on the particle size and concentration of carboxyl groups on the surface.

We were able to correlate the average solubility parameter of the initial reaction mixture with the resulting particle size and found that for water and BMA this system held true, but for AA an inverse trend was discovered. This deviation was described by the presence of PAA blocks on the surface of the particles acting as excess steric stabilizer.
