Thesis (Ph.D.)--Universite Laval (Canada), 2003.
A new series of 4-nitro-4'-alkoxy azobenzene mesogens, functionalised at one end by ammonium (azo-nQ, n = 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12, where n gives the number of methylene groups in the alkoxy spacer) or amine (azo-nN, n = 10, 12) moieties were synthesised and their thermal and structural properties in the solid state characterised by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The focus of this thesis is the ionic complexation between functionalised mesogenic compounds and complementary functional polymers, to create supramolecular side-chain polymeric liquid crystalline materials with potential application in non-linear optics. This complexation is based on ion-ion bonding of oppositely charged components or proton transfer in acid-base systems.

It was demonstrated that after ionic complexation, all cristallinity of the mesogen is suppressed and a smectic A liquid crystalline phase is generated over a wide temperature range. Furthermore, it was shown that the thermal stability of the mesophase is roughly similar, with relatively small dependencies on certain molecular parameters. The variation in Tg's of complexes is less than that for the clearing temperature. The nature of the functional group influences the mesogenic behaviour. The mesogen exerts a strong plasticizing effect on the glass transition of the polymer. Finally, the influence of the composition on the properties of the system has been studied.
