This study uses the data from National Data and Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN) to explore how the characteristics of neighborhoods and their residents are associated with rates of child maltreatment. The results from Ordinary Least Squares regression analysis reveal community disorganization and the use of public places have significant direct effects on the rate of child maltreatment controlling for other neighborhood and resident characteristics. In addition, results indicate that poverty among residents is only indirectly related to child maltreatment rate via the mediating factor of community disorganization; poverty is not significantly associated with child maltreatment rate controlling for resident interaction, community disorganization and residential stability. Results of this study suggest an ecological-level approach within at-risk neighborhoods to combat the crisis of child maltreatment.
