Universal Access to the Information Society requires the adaptation of information presentation to multiple contexts. Our approach is to extract implicit modeling information from a sample presentation, and use this information to generate new adapted presentations reusing elements from the original presentation.

Our thesis focuses in Web Page Adaptation: how to adapt the presentation of web pages to different portable devices. We have implemented and evaluated a system (ADAPT) that automatically and in real-time adapts web pages to portable devices. The system restructures web pages typically designed for desktops in order to adequately display them in portable devices. The system adapts web pages by applying a set of transformations according to device features and user characteristics. The objective of the system is to enable convenient access to the same information anywhere, anytime, and on any device.

To evaluate the system we performed three studies: a usability study with users, a quality study evaluating the adaptation of 100 random websites, and a performance study analyzing the system logs to study performance and size reduction. Users were able to perform the tasks using the automatically adapted versions, and the quality of the adaptation was rated high. ADAPT generates usable adapted web pages in more than 90% of the cases. Our evaluation results indicate that automatic web page adaptation is a feasible and effective technology to display web content in portable devices.
