Thesis (Ph.D.)--Dallas Theological Seminary, 2004.
The idea for this study arose out of an investigation into the meaning of John 5:17, where Jesus states, "My Father is working until now, and I too am working." The narrative casts this work as Sabbath work. The question is, What background evidence is there for God's working on the Sabbath, and how does that background help the interpreter understand Jesus' actions on the Sabbath throughout the Gospels? The study is organized to answer that question.

Chapter two serves to justify the study by defending the historicity of Sabbath controversy in Jesus' life and ministry. This is done through a detailed interaction with John Meier, A Marginal Jew: Rethinking the Historical Jesus, Anchor Bible Reference Library, ed. David Noel Freedman (New York: Doubleday, 1991-- ), who provides a careful treatment on the historical Jesus but denies the reality of Sabbath controversy in Jesus' ministry.

Chapter three is a detailed listing and discussion of pertinent background passages which illuminate the concept of divine Sabbath work. Twelve major areas of literature are searched: the Hebrew Scriptures, Qumran, the LXX, the OT Pseudepigrapha, Josephus, Philo, the Mishnah and Tosefta, the Targums, the Midrashim, the Palestinian Talmud, and the Babylonian Talmud. Passages relevant to the concept of divine Sabbath work are discussed. In addition, other passages which might be useful in interpreting Jesus' Sabbath actions are also discussed in order to provide a control for the study.

Chapter four is a discussion of Jesus' Sabbath actions in light of the context elucidated through the background materials discussed in chapter three. Four major threads of thought regarding the Sabbath are discussed. Jesus' actions are discussed in light of these threads first from a global perspective, which views Jesus' Sabbath actions in light of his ministry as an eschatological prophet, and a particular perspective, which looks specifically at the healing of the bent-over woman in Luke 13 and the healing of the invalid man in John 5.
