This study is a historical review of vocational education in America, the formation of apprenticeships in Colonial America, and the impact of industrialization within our society. The study will examine why the Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School was established, the history of its program development from 1973 to 2001, and recent vocational education trends.

520 $a The Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School is an occupational vocational training facility located approximately 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School began offering vocational-technical training programs to high school students in August 1979.
520 $a In order to start the school, a tremendous amount of research and planning was initiated. Several components have to be in place before starting an area vocational-technical school. This study explores the planning, deliberation, and legal protocol that culminated in the need to establish the Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School and the factors that contributed to the opening and closing of programs over the past two decades.
520 $a Throughout the school's history, twenty-three programs were available to students based upon several factors. The criteria for program offerings include student interest, business and industry needs of the community and the financial ability of the school to support programs.
520 $a Currently the school offers fifteen occupational programs to the students in grades 10, 11, and 12 of all seven participating school districts in Butler County. Areas of study at the Butler County AVTS include the following: production occupations; professional and technical occupations; mechanics, installers and repairers; construction trade occupations; and service occupations.
520 $a Enrollment statistics, graduate follow-up studies, and Pennsylvania Department of Education documentation is included with this study to support and outline the need to maintain successful vocational programs for our future students.
