Thesis (Ph.D.)--Rutgers The State University of New Jersey - New Brunswick, 2004.
In this thesis we study the behavior of systems which attempt to minimize some functional which has no minimizer. In these systems working with the functional directly and studying the 'closeness' between alternative states in the sense of averages provides a more natural and viable possibility as working with the Euler-Lagrange equations associate with the functional.

In this thesis we study the behavior of systems which attempt to minimize some functional which has no minimizer. It is in this spirit that we focus on the problem of thin-film blistering, resulting from anisotropic compression, and study the energetics of blistered thin films using three approaches.

First, the constrained von Karman plate model is employed in deriving scalings for the membrane and bending energies. Far from the initial buckled state, the effect of these scalings on the energetic pathway whereby one ridge buckles into several, under the action of a compressive load, are analyzed from a theoretical perspective using the direct method of the calculus of variations.

Second, we examine these scalings in the light of a series of anisotropic compression experiments. We consider a number of cases which are not accounted for by our theoretical model. Among these the development of fine-scale oscillations, near the boundary of the blister, which couple to the course-scale oscillations away from the boundary. This phenomenon is known as branching and we examine its influence on the overall energy landscape.

We also study the path dependence nature of these deformation, as well as the transition from the isotropic to the anisotropic state.

Finally, we provide evidence for these scalings using numerical simulations.
