The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate competencies and experiences for teaching undergraduate piano pedagogy courses. The researcher developed a list of competencies and experiences stated in the form of objectives. Each objective identified a specific competency representing one of four areas in which undergraduate piano pedagogy instructors have responsibilities, administration, general knowledge, studio management and studio teaching.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A questionnaire designed by the author was used to determine the importance of these competencies and teaching experiences in the preparation of potential undergraduate piano pedagogy instructors. Information was requested from pedagogy teachers to help determine the best way to gain each competency. In addition, respondents were asked to indicate the importance of college or university courses completed, teaching experiences at institutions, independent piano studio teaching and continuing education experiences. The questionnaire also was devised to identify experts in the field of piano pedagogy who are involved in training prospective undergraduate piano pedagogy instructors. One questionnaire was mailed to the pedagogy teacher at the 278 colleges and universities listed in the second edition of the Directory of Piano Pedagogy Offerings in American Colleges and Universities, published by the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy, 1991, that offer an undergraduate piano pedagogy course or series of courses. The 162 questionnaires that were returned represented a response rate of 58.3 percent.

The researcher interviewed the identified experts by telephone. The interviews revealed: (1) which competencies and experiences are met in their graduate degree program, (2) how they achieve the competencies and experiences, (3) additional competencies and experiences developed in the outstanding piano pedagogy teacher programs that were not identified in the study, and (4) how their program prepares prospective undergraduate piano pedagogy instructors. The experts were asked to respond to each questionnaire item so that the expert opinion could be documented separately. Recommendations based on data from the questionnaire and the interviews with the experts were made for future undergraduate piano pedagogy teacher training.
