Humic substances are important components of soil which play a significant role in many chemical, biological, and physical processes. Two of its primary constituents, humic acids and fulvic acids, have been attributed to play an important role in the hydrophobicity (repellency to water) of soils. Thus, our research efforts were aimed at evaluating chemical differences in humic and fulvic acids extracted from samples of the same type of soil, Rio Piedras series, but having significantly different water percolation results, based on the Water Drop Penetration Test (WDPT), in an attempt to better understand the relationship between chemical composition and hydrophobicity. To this end, two different extraction methods were evaluated, one involving sodium hydroxide as extraction solvent and the other sodium pyrophosphate.

Humic and fulvic acids were extracted, from samples from the Mahogany Plantation at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Rio Piedras, tested to be a strongly repellent soil, and from the Urban Forest (Bosque Urbano) in Rio Piedras, tested to be a hydrophilic soil, based on WDPT results of 234 and 4 seconds, respectively.
