This study hypothesizes that filmmakers use the school setting and educators to dramatize contemporary problems and sometimes to pose suggestions for solutions to social problems. The study utilizes a sample of seventeen significant commercial films which provide insight into American social history during the pivotal period 1939-1989, when America emerged as a great power.

Analysis of the films was guided by four dichotomies: individual vs. community, community vs. society, nature vs. culture, and change vs. stability. Each of these is a fundamental and persistent conflict in American society. These dichotomies were applied to the sample films in order to explore how basic values conflicts in American culture are communicated through the use of the school and educators in film. The study grouped films by three historical periods: 1939-1945, when the teacher and school were portrayed as helping build the new order of opportunity and class harmony; 1950s and 1960s, when schools in film prepared youth for the Cold War and where strategies of counterinsurgency were illustrated; and 1970s and 1980s, which began with rebellion against Cold War consensus and concluded with a restatement of traditional values against a political background of resurgent conservatism. The study also examined the image of the teacher as an immature "child-adult." Three films provided special insight into the image of female teachers over the period.

The study concludes that filmmakers have used the setting of the school and the characters of educators to explore stresses as the nation grappled with its new international power and changes as society dealt with problems in areas such as race, gender, and youth. Films also suggested possible solutions. Continued work in this field is recommended for its historical value and for an appreciation of the complexity of the role of education and its practitioners in American society.
