With recent performance advancement in computer and wireless communication technologies, advanced mobile wireless computing is expected to see increasingly widespread use and application. The aim of Mobile Ad Hoc Networking (MANET) is to extend mobility into the field of autonomous, mobile, wireless domains, which will provide any time, anywhere computing.

In this research, the objective is to develop a routing scheme for portable devices in MANETs. Adjusting transmission power of mobile nodes in MANETs to maintain the connectivity of networks is considered here. Based on this idea, three power-based routing schemes which are Power State Routing (PSR), Power-Based Source Routing (PBSR) and Adaptive Power-based Source Routing (APSR) are proposed.

PSR is a hierarchical link state based routing scheme. In PSR, each node adjusts transmission power of nodes to maintain the network topology map and exchanges the network topology information periodically. Transmission power of nodes jumps between several levels in the networks. PSR is a proactive routing.

In contrast, PBSR is a reactive source routing. PBSR uses on-demand operations. In PBSR, transmission power changes continuously. PBSR only adjusts transmission power of the nodes which belong to active routes. In addition, PBSR uses timers control to refresh route state information.

Adaptive Power-based Source Routing (APSR) is proposed for mobile ad hoc communications. APSR uses an adaptive method to control the lifetime of the route and the running mode.

In this work, three power-based routings are implemented within GloMoSim library. The performances of them are investigated respectively. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the power-based routings guarantee data transmission with high energy efficiency when nodes move around in the networks.
