The MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories, the Child Development Inventory and the Play Assessment Questionnaire, as English parental report instruments assessing language, play and general development, have been adapted to the Chinese written language. Each of 30 Mandarin-speaking caregivers, whose children were 7-24 months-old, were given the three forms to fill out. The 30 children were divided into three age groups: 7-12 months (mean age 9.4 months), 13-18 months (mean age 15 months) and 19-24 months (mean age 22.4 months); with five boys and five girls in each of the age groups.

Results show that Mandarin-speaking children's language, play and general development share the same trends as those of English-speaking children. These Chinese children's language production development shows a slower pace before the age of 19 months, and approach the English norms after the age of 19 months. No gender difference has been found in any aspects before the age of 19 months, and significant gender differences appear after 19 months, mainly girls' language skills develop earlier than boys' language skills. These findings agree with Chinese child rearing practice which views the age of 18 months as an important milestone.

It was found that the skills of "Pretend Play" and "Pretend play with Pretend language" among the Mandarin-speaking children lagged behind the English-speaking children. Chinese child rearing practice and cultural socialization may impact Chinese children's cognitive development, thus contributing to these consequences.

Significant correlations were found among the variables of language, play and general development for the two younger age groups. Significant correlations were found among the language and general development variables for the 19-24 month group. These findings agree with similar results from other languages and cultures.

Measures of internal consistency support the reliability of these Chinese assessments and significant external correlations support the validity of these Chinese instruments as well. Suggestions are made for further studies. The Chinese assessments, the English notes and translation are provided.
