This dissertation traces the recovery of medieval Castilian poetry by eighteenth-century scholars in Spain, which culminated in the first editions of the Poema de Mio Cid and the Libro de buen amor , among others, by the royal librarian Tomas Antonio Sanchez. I describe and analyze the discursive developments carried out by these scholars, from the compilation of bibliographical catalogues to the writing of the first literary histories. These initiatives made possible the reappropriation of the earliest Castilian poetic texts, which occurred within the ideological controversy that raged throughout the century between the so-called castizos and afrancesados, regarding Spain's cultural and historical identity. The main texts I discuss are Nicolas Antonio's Bibliotheca Hispana, Feijoo's "Glorias de Espana", Ignacio de Luzan's Poetica, Martin Sarmiento's Memorias para la historia de la poesia y poetas espanoles, Luis Jose Velazquez's Origenes de la poesia castellana, and Tomas Antonio Sanchez's Coleccion de poesias castellanas anteriores al siglo XV.
