The nonhuman primates of the Mentawai Islands (Hylobates klossii, Macaca pagensis, Presbytis potenziani, and Simias concolor ) are endangered due to habitat destruction and human predation. Therefore, in this study, the effects of logging, hunting, and vegetation on these primates were examined on the Pagai, Mentawai Islands. Primate, hunting-related, and vegetative surveys were conducted in nine dipterocarp forests that varied in the time since they were logged (forests were either logged ten years ago, twenty years ago, or never logged). The results indicate that densities of Kloss gibbons and Mentawai pig-tailed macaques were similar in logged and unlogged forests, while Mentawai Island leaf monkey and simakobu densities varied according to logging stage. Leaf monkey densities were significantly higher in forests that were logged approximately twenty years ago than they were in forests that were logged ten to twelve years ago or in unlogged forests. In contrast, simakobu densities were significantly higher in unlogged forests than they were in logged forests. In addition, although significantly more people harvested macaques and simakobus than gibbons and leaf monkeys, hunting did not appear to have a negative impact on any primate species' density. Furthermore, Mentawai pig-tailed macaque densities were not significantly affected by any of the vegetative variables used in this study, while gibbon, leaf langur, and simakobu densities were.

520 $a The densities of the primates of the Pagai, Mentawai Islands are influenced by many factors including timber removal, human predation, and habitat. It appears that selective logging on the islands as practiced thus far is compatible with maintaining gibbon, macaque, and leaf monkey populations. In contrast, logging seems to be detrimental to simakobu monkeys. Therefore, a habitat mosaic with tracts of secondary and primary forest might support the healthiest population of Pagai primates. In addition, although it might be regretted that a cultural component is fading, the trend of the Pagai men to hunt primates less now than they did in the past, will probably benefit the primates. Last, additional data are needed on the rare tree species of the Mentawai Islands in order to more fully evaluate the relationship between vegetation and primate densities.
