To date there has been no solid answer yet to many fundamental problems of Borobudur. We still do not know what Borobudur is, why the builders built it, nor even the meaning of its name. Conclusive support for any particular interpretation is still to be found. In the past the most frequent method for understanding Borobudur has been to examine the reliefs and their symbolism, and on that basis to identify a text or set of texts as the source for the construction of the monument. On the basis of such an approach, scholars have debated whether Borobudur is a memorial (stupa) or a diagram of the cosmos (man&dotbelow;d&dotbelow;ala). Such speculations, however, have failed for two reasons. First, they fail to take into account an epigraphic record known as the Kayumwungan inscription from central Java dated to 824. This inscription, when read correctly, turns out to memorialize the consecration of Borobudur, and when taken together with other related textual sources, such as the Lalitavistara-sutra , and the Bhadracari, provides significant information regarding the origin of Borobudur. Second, scholars have assumed a single textual source, but, even when symbolic references from several texts have been cited, these sources do not explain the architectural model that inspired the monument's construction. Hence, establishing the architectural model for the monument as a whole must take priority over the question of the textual sources of the narrative reliefs or the specific symbolism of the monument's decorations.

Employing a multi-disciplinary approach, among them historical, philological, and visual, this dissertation attempts to demonstrate three claims: (1) that the Sanskrit portion of the Kayumwungan inscription narrates events leading to the consecration of Borobudur and thereby describes the origin of Borobudur, including its architectural model, modifications, organizing themes, meaning, and function; (2) that the architectural model of Borobudur was a penthouse (kut&dotbelow;agara) of the Buddha Sakyamuni as described in the Lalitavistara-sutra; and that (3) the meaning of the name "Borobudur" is "an excellent Buddha-image" (buddha-rupa), and that this meaning correlates both with the description in the Kayumwungan inscription and with the architectural model of Borobudur.
