Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of Hawai'i, 1989.
This study evaluates the educational thought of Saicho (767-822), founder of the Tendai School of Buddhism in Japan. The Tendai School was established on Mt. Hiei during the beginning of the Heian period (794-1185). Buddhism has been a primary cultural stimulus in Japan from the Heian period to the modern age, as its temples have served as educational institutions not only for Buddhist priests but for the common people as well. One of the impressive things about Saicho was his deep commitment to education. Saicho interpreted the teaching of Mahayana Buddhism according to his philosophy of "One vehicle thought" (Ichijo shiso). A central concern is to understand Saicho's thoughts on education and to consider whether these ideas provide meaningful solutions to the contemporary educational problems of a modern society like Japan.Subjects--Topical Terms:
