This research examines the published letters, sermons, and journals of George Whitefield. Focusing primarily on the content of his letters, it attempts to shed some light on Whitefield's theological contribution to the eighteenth-century revival of religion. Particular attention is paid to Whitefield's ideas about the nature of God, man, and salvation, and how those ideas fit into the general theological climate of his day. Whitefield's factious relationship with John Wesley is also probed.Subjects--Topical Terms:

With the aid of a personal computer, a simple word frequency count was conducted on a sample of letters written between 1735 and 1742. Various words were analyzed in context for their meaning and consistency of use. The research indicates that George Whitefield generally maintained a distinct amount of consistency in his communication with others, and identifies his personal correspondence as a useful indicator of his theological ideas.
