Thesis (D.Min.)--Vancouver School of Theology (Canada), 2004.
Synergy in Ministry is an examination of team ministry. The study begins with an outline of the Trinitarian theology and leans toward the work of Jurgen Moltmann and Wolfhart Pannenberg. The threeness of the Trinity, the subjectivity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is taken seriously. The quality of diversity is sought ahead of unity; Christian unity is discovered in diversity. Moltmann's disciple in ecclesiology is Miroslav Volf; it is upon Volf's post-modern investigation of a fresh ecumenical ecclesiology that informs the quest.

The choice for field-based research is a congregation within The Presbyterian Church in Canada. St. Columba by-the-Lake is a 50-year-old congregation on the West Island of Montreal---"the English Ghetto" of the city. In 1972, two ministers were called to the congregation, their names on one call document, and they called themselves a "team ministry". The study explores how that ministry has fared over the course of the thirty-year period from 1972 until 2002. The team has evolved and changed principals, yet it has remained with a high level of commitment to this form of ministry.

The study moves through the congregations' strengths and its challenges and ends with some contributions proffered to both denominational structures and congregations. How this form of ministry pervades congregational life and informs the meaning-making of its people is explored. The contributions are identified in such areas as preaching, decision by consensus; the incorporation of lay people in ministry, and the challenge of clergy working together in a congregation.
