Since 1970 an increasing number of women have been ordained as ministers in the various denominations of the Christian Church. Although women clergy are in principle accepted by the Church, the issue of sexism raises many questions about their full status. One of the most obvious places where sexism persists is the pulpit. A woman may readily become a minister or a pastor. However, she is less likely to become the preacher. Given the immense symbolic power of the pulpit, women will not achieve equality with men in the Church unless they are given access to the pulpit.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This dissertation explores ways in which women can achieve equality in the Church. Asserting that the institutionalization of sexism in the Church constitutes the main source of the continuing marginalization of women, the author first provides a brief history of feminist thought. Next, she places women within the context of an emerging rhetoric of feminism, arguing that desired change can be brought about rhetorically, through the creation and seizing of rhetorical opportunities.

The above position is illustrated extensively by the case of Agnes Maude Royden, an Anglican woman who became a well known preacher in 1917. This case study reflects the contemporary dilemmas of women in the present. Although Royden enjoyed success, it was short-lived. The Anglican Church at the time was not persuaded by her arguments to ordain women. Consequently, she was not succeeded by other women preachers.

Royden's story suggests that if women are to become equal with men in the leadership of the Church, they must create and seize rhetorical opportunities to obtain access to the pulpit. Once in the pulpit, they can redefine their own status and, in the process, acquire more access, and so on, until they achieve full equality.
