The purpose of this study was to trace the philosophical changes that took place in Sutton E. Griggs, who was a prolific African American writer on race relations during the early years of the twentieth century. Griggs was a clergyman and founding spirit of the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. After relocating to Memphis in 1913, he abandoned his earlier apologetic stance against the anti-black propaganda that swept the country following Reconstruction. After 1913 his philosophy was dominated by his accommodationist espousal of "social efficiency."Subjects--Topical Terms:
