520 $a As volunteer chair of the Department of Ministry of the Christian Church/Capital Area the author was involved in issues relating to ministry. The Capital Area is one of 36 regions in the denomination, each functioning independently within Policies and Criteria adopted in 1968. Regions do this work through Commissions on Ministry. The study attempted to survey each of the regions to determine how they carried out their responsibility to oversee the order of ministry, particularly steps leading to ordination. Differences and similarities in how regions were structured, organized and functioned were identified and suggestions made regarding the performance of the Capital Area, including the coordination of relationships among students, congregations, seminaries and other regions.
520 $a A specific focus of the research was to evaluate the role of congregations in the care and development of persons preparing for ministry. An historical look at the congregrations and presbyterial roots of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was undertaken as well as a study of theological issues related to ministry and authority in the church. Current Disciple practices were examined within the context of the modern ecumenical movement.
520 $a The concluding chapter is intended to become a manual for sponsoring congregations to encourage their participation as partners with the regions in the nurture, guidance and recommendation of candidates for ordination on behalf of the whole Church. Recommendations were based upon the results of the survey, literature research, and interviews with seminarian nurture and guidance committees of three congregations within the region.
