Thesis (D.Mis.)--Fuller Theological Seminary, School of World Mission, 1990.
This is a study of the origins, aspects, and missionary activities of nondenominational charismatic churches and ministries based in the U.S.A. Two missiological theses underlie the entire study. First, the thesis that renewal movements usually birth new missionary movements prompts the question, what kind of missionary movement has the charismatic renewal produced? Related to this is the emphasis on the Holy Spirit as a missionary Spirit.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Second, this study rests on the thesis that missionary outreach is more effective when local churches and extra-local mission structures work together to expedite the missionary task. Many charismatic churches, having withdrawn from denominations and traditional mission structures, lack formal ties to overarching mission structures and, consequently, are falling short of their missionary potential. Other charismatic churches, as this study shows, are pioneering their own structures and strategies for missionary outreach.

Chapters 1-5 are historical in character, focusing on the origins and aspects of independent charismatic churches--a facet of the charismatic renewal virtually overlooked by scholars until recently. Chapters 6 and 7 identify, analyze, and evaluate a selection of charismatic missionary models in the light of contemporary church growth principles. Chapters 8 and 9 bring missionary anthropology and theology of mission to bear upon the independent charismatic movement. And Chapter 10 draws from the findings of the study, suggesting some guidelines for planning strategies to unleash a more effective charismatic missionary force.

The goal of this thesis is to help charismatic churches further realize their massive missionary potential, plan more effective mission strategies, and mobilize their vast resources to make their greatest possible contribution to the task of discipling all peoples to Christ.
