Jonathan Edwards was one of the preeminent clergymen in eighteenth century New England. He was pastor in Northampton, Massachusetts, for twenty-three years, from 1726 until 1749, including the stimulating and disquieting turmoil of the Great Awakening. He was asked to leave his church in 1749, over the issue of qualifications for church membership and the Lord's Supper. This controversy had its origin in the so-called "Half-Way" Covenant of 1662, and Solomon Stoddard's alteration of it to invite half-way members to partake of Holy Communion. When Edwards, oft of deeply-held personal convictions, attempted to lead his congregation back to New England's previous practice of inviting only members of the church in full standing to the Lord's Table, his congregation defied him and asked him to leave. The significance of his stand as a matter of conscience, in spite of the presence of other factors, has been neglected in recent scholarship. This dissertation is an attempt to add balance and proportion to Edwards' quarrel with Northampton congregation, and emphasize its theological basis.Subjects--Topical Terms:
