Blacks have been "invisible" in American church history and social thought until the last twenty years. Since Reconstruction, however, the white community has intermittently debated "the Negro problem" without taking into consideration whether individuals or institutions within the Afro-American community were viewing "the problem" from a different perspective.

The black American's invisibility took on an added dimension in this debate, namely, the failure to print or take seriously the words of black's who, for one reason or another, had agendas and judgments that did not conform to the prevailing "solution." One aspect of this dissertation is an attempt to address itself to this basic problem in American church history by illuminating selected dimensions of this debate through the prism of the thought and writings of Reverdy Cassius Ransom, a Christian leader and spokesman in one of America's largest black-controlled Protestant denominations for over three-quarters of a century.

This dissertation will examine the factors that shaped Ransom's understanding during his student days, his career as a pastor, as editor of the denomination's literary journal, and, finally, as a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. At each milestone of his career, which began during Grover Cleveland's first term as president and concluded, for all practical purposes, in the Truman Administration, this author shall focus primarily on Ransom's understanding of race and racism as reflected in the issues of education, ecclesiology and domestic politics that consistently dominated his public and literary work.

This thematic and historical approach will allow Reverdy Ransom's ninety-eight years of involvement in race and racism to speak for themselves while, at the same time, focus in depth on a central issue that has present day lessons for the contemporary student of race relations in America.
