Thesis (Ph.D.)--Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Theology, 1988.
This dissertation studies the specific function of Scriptural authority in Evangelical methods of moral deliberation. Contemporary Evangelical theology emerged in the mid-1940s as an attempt to offer a scholarly, conservative faith in contrast to the anti-intellectual tone of Fundamentalism. The movement is comprised of members of varied Protestant theological traditions, including Reformed, Lutheran, Baptist, Anabaptist, and Pentecostal denominations. The unifying factor for these diverse traditions is a firm belief in the authority of the Bible for all matters of faith and practice.Subjects--Topical Terms:

First, the study analyzes contemporary scholarship regarding the nature of moral authority and the justification of the Bible for use in moral deliberation. This provides the basis for the development of six questions regarding a writer's conception of moral authority and his or her use of the Bible in resolving ethical questions.

Secondly, these questions are applied in a survey of the Protestant use of the Bible as a moral authority from the Reformation through the Fundamentalist/Modernist controversy. This segment begins with the moral deliberation of major Reformers and Protestant Scholastics. It also examines several major eighteenth century theologians and two examples of American Protestant morality from the nineteenth century.

Finally, the questions are applied to book-length works on morality by contemporary American Evangelicals. These individual analyses explain the types of biblical texts used, and the ways they are applied to contemporary moral issues. They also explore how authors combine their theological traditions and non-scriptural forms of authority with the Bible in moral deliberation. In a brief summary the study cites points of unity and diversity among Evangelicals regarding the Bible's moral authority.
