Thesis (M.A.)--The University of New Mexico, 2004.
Flamenco has continually and successfully reinvented itself throughout its history. The survival of its practitioners has depended on a willingness to meet the needs and demands of their audiences. This thesis addresses the power of audience to shape performance through an exploration of three flamenco venues in Granada, Spain: Pena La Plateria, the theatre La Chumbera, and the Almanjayar performance group, Taller de Compas. Influenced by twenty-first century technology, a global economy, and mass culture, they are working to preserve local, Granadino flamenco traditions while finding their way through this new world. Western audience reception studies have been modified to fit the variations found in these non-traditional performers and audiences, who depend on a performance text, not a written one, and on audience participation. Parallel to the natural world, the existence of flamenco variety ensures survival for many.
