Forty-four males between the ages of 18 and 35 volunteered to participate in the study. The subjects were randomly assigned to either the supplement (SU) or placebo (PL) groups. At the start of study, the subjects in the SU and PL were similar for age, body weight, and body fat percentage. The subjects strength trained 4 days per week and received either a supplement drink or isocaloric placebo drink immediately upon completion of each workout. Although there was a greater increase in fat-free mass (FFM) in the SU based on hydrostatic weighing, there was no difference between groups for FFM derived from skinfold measurements. These results may be due differences in the determination of body density. In conclusion although there was a larger increase in FFM with hydrostatic weighting, the increases for the SU larger increase was most likely due to intracellular water retention from creatine and not contractile protein.
