An examination of the concept of leisure and the history of recreation in the Capital District. The link between leisure and culture is established through the context of the rich 'outdoor' heritage which local residents have inherited. A case study of physical education at Albany High School is included, together with a student survey of leisure-time practices and the use of free time. The paper takes the position that physical education is an essential part of the growth and development of young people. However, class, economic and ethnic constraints continue to be obstacles to the wise use of free time by young people in Albany. It is up to the physical education curriculum to rise to the challenge of electronic forms of entertainment and introduce multicultural programs serving the needs of both the student and the community. This paper makes suggestions as to how this goal can be accomplished.
