Results. The majority of women (>90%) who were tested for BRCA mutations shared information about genetic counseling, genetic testing and mutation status with their adult children. Mutation status, positive or negative, did not significantly alter the amount of information shared. Women positive for a BRCA mutation found it significantly more difficult to share results with children than non-mutation carriers. Relationships were not changed after disclosure of mutation status. Overall, women were satisfied with the amount of genetic information given to them by the Cancer Risk Program and felt they could adequately relay that information to their children (4.74 out of 5.00). Women indicated the most helpful genetic counseling tool would be information packets prepared by the counselor for individual family members. The tool perceived to be least helpful was role-playing during the genetic counseling session.

Conclusions. Regardless of mutation status, women understand the importance of their genetic information for themselves and their family members. The majority of these women are communicating the results of genetic testing as well as the genetic counseling and testing process. From the parent's perspective, sharing this sensitive information does not positively or negatively affect their relationships with their children. The overwhelming majority of women who received genetic counseling and testing through the Cancer Risk Program at UCSF report satisfaction with their experience. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
