The purpose of this study is to understand better the nature of motivation and its importance to the study of wind instruments. The problems were to identify timbre-motivated and socially-motivated junior high and high school aged wind students, and examine differences in their prior and total musical experience, music aptitude, and performance achievement. A volunteer pool of 160 high school and junior high students completed the Timbre Motivation Questionnaire (TMQ) to determine the nature of their motivational style and background in music, and the Advanced Measures of Music Audiation (AMMA, Gordon, 1989) to measure their tonal, rhythm, and total music aptitude. From the pool of 160 volunteers, 60 students volunteered to perform Form A of the Watkins-Farnum Performance Scale (WFPS, Watkins and Farnum, 1954) to measure their instrumental performance achievement. Of these 60 students (designated the Experimental Subsample or ES), 29 were classified as timbre-motivated, and 31 were classified as socially-motivated. The ES students' prior and total musical experience and music aptitude were tested using Analysis of Variance, and confirmed to be equivalent to that of the volunteer pool. The ES students' prior and total musical experience, tonal music aptitude, rhythm music aptitude, total music aptitude and performance achievement scores were examined for differences attributable to motivational style. Additionally, the effects of motivational style, music aptitude, and total musical time upon performance achievement were examined.

The results of this study showed that (a) timbre-motivated and socially-motivated students showed no significant difference in their prior or total musical experience, or their tonal music aptitude or rhythm music aptitude. (b) The students classified as timbre-motivated scored significantly higher ( p < .05) in performance achievement than those classified as socially-motivated. (c) Motivational style, music aptitude, and total time in music were found to be significant (p < .05) and separate influences upon performance achievement. (d) The timbre-motivated and socially-motivated students were similar in their attraction to the sound of their instrument and the point in time in which they first became aware of its appeal, but dissimilar in the degree of self-determination they reported regarding the decision to participate in instrumental music, or the influence of instrument timbre upon that decision.
