Thesis (Ph.D.)--George Mason University, 1997.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of changes in death anxiety and death competency of students who participated in a graduate-level death education course. A descriptive qualitative methodology using pre- and post-tests, weekly journals, and a one-hour interview examined the subjective reality of personal changes in death-related attitudes and behaviors. Findings suggest that students perceived increased death competency and decreased death anxiety. The changes in death-related attitudes and behaviors emerged from personal factors and course factors. The significance of these changes was defined by the students as a phenomenological learning experience, and as "soulwork." Implications and recommendations are proposed for future curriculum development, counselor preparation programs, and research in the field of death and dying.
