Thesis (M.L.I.S.)--San Jose State University, 2004.
Intellectual freedom is a core value of American librarianship, but it was still a fairly new concept when libraries were confronted during the Cold War by attempts to control and restrict access to information due to concerns over national security. Contemporary libraries are also facing threats to information access in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the current War on Terrorism. This paper reviews and compares the reactions of librarians to infringing behavior for both periods by examining the professional literature of the time to find how widespread and how strong support for intellectual freedom has been within the profession.
