The primary argument of this dissertation is that the prevailing political theology of the American Founding was theistic rationalism---a hybrid belief system blending together elements of rationalism, natural religion, and Christianity.

Chapter One introduces and explains the concept of theistic rationalism and contrasts it to Christianity and Deism. Terms are defined and the historico-religious background of the period established. The chapter ends by presenting the prevailing views of the political theology of the Founding: the secular and Christian America views.

Chapters Two, Three, and Four explore the religious beliefs of the Founders who were most forthcoming in their expressions of religious belief. They were the three primary authors of the Declaration of Independence: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. These chapters refute the idea that Adams was an orthodox Christian and that Jefferson and Franklin were deists.

Chapter Five is devoted to the religious beliefs of George Washington. In refutation of the competing claims that he was an orthodox Christian or a deist, this study shows Washington's beliefs to be inconsistent with both Christianity and Deism and consistent with theistic rationalism.

Chapter Six treats the religious beliefs of four key framers of the Constitution: James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Gouverneur Morris, and James Wilson. While they rarely discussed their religious beliefs, analysis of their expressed beliefs and their actions shows them to be inconsistent with both orthodox Christianity and Deism and consistent with theistic rationalism.

Chapter Seven traces the origin and development of theistic rationalism through the thought of the "divines" who had the greatest influence on the key Founders and patriotic preachers.

Chapter Eight focuses on the patriotic clergy. An analysis of political sermons of the period demonstrates that these ministers were theistic rationalists and that they used the pulpit to promote first the Revolution and later the newly created American political system.

Chapter Nine draws the various elements of the dissertation to a conclusion, summarizes the argument, and contends for the significance of the thesis.
