Thesis (M.Sc.E.)--The University of New Brunswick (Canada), 2001.
Studying the drainage rate in a paper machine before the dry line, it was found that fiber mat porosity and pulp freeness have a large influence on the behavior of the pulp over the wire. A mathematical relationship between the Canadian Standard Freeness, the consistency, the density, the fiber diameter of the pulp and the porosity of the fiber mat deposited over the wire was developed. In filled papermaking, the heterogeneous composition of the pulp makes the model more difficult to establish. The fiber mat cannot be described as a capillary bed and therefore the concept of tortuosity factor has been introduced in several equations describing the drainage phenomena. To define the tortuosity factor, porosity of fiber mat was considered as the most significant influencing parameter.

Introducing these parameters in a list of equations, a software program was developed in Visual Basic. This program can give an estimation of the pre-dry line evolution of the suspension's height, the accumulation over the wire, the whitewater's consistency and the drainage velocity along the paper machine. By entering a few parameters describing the pulp and the papermachine into the software, these properties can be evaluated. The model developed in this study was validated based on the data from a paper mill using a blend of pulp of low freeness (<50). A set of laboratory experiments had been performed to check the validity of some assumptions and to compare the results to the one obtained from the model.
