The subject of this research is the theater, how it is practiced, and the impact it has had in the contemporary Czech Republic. The role of theaters in the Czechoslovak revolution has been well documented, but the relationship of expressive forms to their influence is less clear. Mimesis was first coined by Plato and Aristotle, and its meaning tends to be reductively simplified. Thorough analysis indicates that there is a great deal more to mimesis than mere iconicity, however; indexicality is equally critical, and they come together in impersonation.

The context of Czech theater extends farther back than 1989. The theaters that had a leading role in the revolution developed their audiences and established themselves as credible alternatives to the Socialist government. By contrast, no company now is successfully leading the community or setting any overall tone. Although several theaters are attempting to create their own niches, no one has managed to take a leading role.

Three case studies provide the basis of the research, selected for geographical variety and presentational differences. The first was Worn Out Dreams , a Czech-South African collaboration at Prague's Archa Theatre. Collaboratively developed and designed by a Czech artistic team, this performance relied on discarded objects used in imaginative ways to create a unique stage language. Continuo Theatre's annual, site specific Kratochvileni in southern Bohemia was the second production. This project was non-language based and used music, large-scale puppets, and symbols to develop its narrative. The last was the former dissident company Theatre Goose on a String's Undertakers, Inc., a series of performances intending to mimic television sit-coms.

The case studies serve to expand upon the initial definition of mimesis, as does the social nature of the event. Mimesis-in-theater is also compared to mimesis in other contexts, such as play therapy, and to non-mimetic methods of influencing behavior. Together, this analysis provides for an understanding of when and how mimesis is an effective and influential means of communication.
