Grassman's laws of color matching are not obeyed for short wavelength lights when color matching functions are obtained from maximally saturated and desaturated matching fields (Crawford, Vision Res. 5:71-78, 1965; Wyszecki & Stiles, Color Science, 1982; Zaidi, Vision Res. 26:1925-1938, 1986). In this study, possible causes of these failures were analyzed.

520 $a In Experiment 1, a difference in color matching functions for short wavelength lights from saturated and desaturated matches was replicated. In Experiment 2, color matches were performed to determine whether factors related to SWS cones contributed to the failure of these laws. These factors were: (1) Change of SWS cone excitation between the saturated and the desaturated matches; (2) The poor spatial resolution power of the S-cones; (3) Variation in the distribution of SWS cone sensitivity. In Experiment 3, asymmetry in discrimination around matches was analysed. In Experiment 4, spatial inhomogeneity of macular pigment was studied as a contributor to the failure of Grassman's laws. Experiments 5 and 6 looked at post-receptoral mechanisms, luminance and hue mechanisms, in saturated and desaturated color matching.
