The author of this dissertation has been intimately involved in developing and establishing a software package called EMDS, distributed and owned by Cray Research, Inc. It is one of only two CAD-based software systems for modeling electromagnetic wave scattering in three-dimensions. This dissertation will discuss theoretical extensions that will permit EMDS to model impedance-loaded structures that require a large computational dynamic range.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This dissertation gives a brief discussion of the standard FD-TD method and the modifications necessary to implement the contour FD-TD method. An explanation of author's motivation for this course of research follows. The case of a 26.6

flared horn antenna in 2 dimensions is used to show the need for improved radiation boundary conditions. Two possible new boundary conditions that were not suitable to the FD-TD method are discussed. An exciting new absorbing boundary condition that works extremely well for termination of an FD-TD mesh is presented, and results are demonstrated. Previous literature in the area of surface impedance boundary conditions is discussed, and the best method is selected. The development of this method is shown, and results are presented.
