The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of stereotypes on black students in Ontario high schools. I wanted to examine the factors that have lead to the creation of black stereotypes, and determine whether or not these stereotypes were rejected or embraced by the black learner. More specifically, I wanted to know if black stereotypes had a positive or negative impact on the academic achievement of black students in high school.

Information was gathered from pre-service and in-service observations of teachers and students in Toronto area high schools. Data was also collected from four in-depth interviews with recent graduates from the Toronto area secondary schools. These interviews suggest that stereotypes play a significant role in the way black students perceive themselves as learners, and thus black stereotypes have a negative impact on the academic success of black students in Ontario high schools.
