The objective of the research is descriptive, and addresses two main questions. The first question is, Do jointly developed linguistic artifacts tend to evolve in the context of complex activity systems showing high levels of distribution? The second question is, Will the appearance of jointly developed linguistic artifacts impact the effectiveness of team learning on the systems and/or individual level?

The methodological framework for this study was drawn primarily from Hutchins (2000). The primary emphasis was on the methods of anthropology and cognitive science. Tool sets for detailed analysis of social interactions were drawn from Hutchins (2000), Suchman (1987), Heath (1991), and Schegloff (1991).

Overall, the results of this study suggest that jointly developed linguistic artifacts do tend to evolve in the context of activity systems showing high levels of system distribution. Results also suggest that the appearance of jointly developed linguistic artifacts does impact the effectiveness of team learning on the systems and the individual level. In each of the observed processes, tacitly formed conceptual models played a key role as the crucial "technology" enabling group performance.

The results of this study indicate that group based learning behaviors build from a shared culturally transmitted schema to a fully elaborated shared conceptual model that is likely to take the form of a verbal or linguistic construct, and that his group based learning task is driven by a process of data transformation, translation and re-contextualization that can be thought of as moving in both horizontal and vertical directions.

The results of this study also tend to privilege the definition of technology in instructional technology away from complex delivery technologies, and toward those most basic of technologies---of thought, of speech---on which human cooperation in fact depends, and on which all the other technologies whose use we study are built.
