Thesis (M.A.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2004.
This thesis examines how black nationalism constructs queer and feminine objects and how these identities are constitutive elements in the political project of masculine communion. The essay examines a number of interrelated themes. Chiefly, it historically situates such ideas as internal-colonialism, indirect-rule, and Marxist/Communist thought and praxis. It also investigates the elision of women in Black Power's analysis of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, foregrounding a critique of black leadership, specifically, such organizations as the National Association of Colored People, the National Urban League, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The essay also discusses the radicalization of the Southern Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and explores how racial and class separatism parlay into a discussion of sex and sexuality and the construction of masculine communion as the sole future of black nationalism.
