This qualitative study is based on information gleaned through a series of interviews with six music therapists conducted over a period of one year. Using case examples, these music therapists described their experience of intuition and how they use it in their work with clients. The participants in this study described experiencing intuition through physical, emotional, auditory, and visual messages as well as on a spiritual level.

In the process of recognizing and using intuition the participants described conditions that surrounded this experience. These conditions were as follows: (a) trusting in the knowledge received through intuition, (b) listening deeply to self and to the client, (c) self-awareness on the part of the therapist, (d) previous experience and education as a foundation for intuition and (e) the quality of the relationship to the client.

When music therapists use intuition to form interventions it affects the therapeutic relationship and the client's growth process in therapy. Based on the clinical examples shared by the participants it was observed that these music therapists relied on intuition when trying to make a connection with a client and when trying to move the client from a point of tension to one of release. When the music therapists formed interventions based on intuitive knowledge there was a turning point in the relationship and in the client's growth.

Timing was an important factor in the process of using intuition with clients. The music therapists were aware of their client's developmental level and ability to receive the information that came to the therapist intuitively. There were times when the therapists acted in the moment from intuition and times when they consciously chose to hold the information until they believed the client was prepared to receive it.

Since all of the participants in this study practice music therapy using improvisational techniques, intuition in improvisation became another important focus in the findings. The participants elaborated on the relationship of improvisation to intuition and the importance of remaining open to intuition in this creative process.
