The purpose of this study was to examine the state of environmentally sustainable interior design practice and to determine the characteristics of interior designers who apply environmentally sustainable interior design to their projects. Based on the impact of the built environment on the health of the natural environment, interior designers are in the position to contribute to the creation of a world that embraces environmental, economic, and social sustainability. While some interior designers are using sustainable design criteria in their design, research that investigates how interior designers apply environmentally sustainable design as a component for current design problems has not been conducted. Knowing the state of environmentally sustainable interior design practice will provide a base to develop education strategies for sustainable interior design.

A national, Internet-based survey of interior design practitioners was conducted to collect data. The target population was interior design practitioners in U.S. and the accessible population was U.S. interior design practitioners in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). A random sample was drawn from ASID's membership list. An email was sent to respondents, asking them to visit a specified Web site to complete the questionnaire. Descriptive statistical analysis focused on the state of environmentally sustainable interior design practice. Inferential statistical analysis focused on the relationship between interior designers' characteristics and environmentally sustainable interior design practice.

Findings indicated that although interior designers acknowledge the importance of environmentally sustainable design practice, they have not frequently applied it to their projects. Use of sustainable interior materials was identified as less frequently applied component of environmentally sustainable interior design. There was a significant relationship between interior designers' characteristics and how often they apply environmentally sustainable interior design to projects and how important it is to interior designers. However, there was no significant relationship for how important environmentally sustainable interior design is to a designer's firm. It was concluded that size of interior design project was a predictor for environmentally sustainable interior design practice for frequency of application, while design practice specialization was a predictor for importance to the designer.
