This research examined the experience of surrender through dance, and the conceptualization of this experience through stimulated recall. I used large plastic gymnic balls as a tool or prop for movement exploration. These balls required body control and a heightened sensitivity to the moving. Negotiating between control and letting go in order to move effectively on the balls suggested to me that this might be a place where participants might experience the phenomenon of surrender. By exploring the body's response to music, to the ball, or to a partner, I created opportunities for participants to evoke bodily experiences of surrender. The research process drew from interpretive phenomenological and arts based methodologies. Through intrinsic dance, or dancing for self, the participants explored and negotiated experiences of control and letting go as a way to move toward a bodily 'know how' and an intellectual 'know that' of surrender.

There were two stages to this project. This first involved the bodily experiences of selected participants surrendering on/with/to gymnic balls recorded on video. The second involved reflection about these experiences in a stimulated recall session in which participants viewed selections from the film and attempted to recall their experiences of surrender. I was curious about how the body knows through movement, and how this procedural knowledge is different from intellectual thought reflected in spoken propositions. Eight volunteers, six women and two men, took part in the study. Participants met weekly for eight weeks. Three different digital video cameras recorded the movement work and discussion. At the completion of the movement sessions, participants partook in unstructured interviews, and reflected on sections of the movement tapes. Each interview followed a similar format, but was also personally suited to each participant. The interviews were also recorded on digital videotape. The results of the research are presented in a digital-video-disc (DVD) that displays, interprets, and discusses the findings of the study. The documentary film highlights the purpose of the research, the process used to inquire into the experience of surrender, and examples of both surrender and non-surrender activities.
