Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 1993.
The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the functions of the actions of the free limb during support phases of the triple jump and their relationships with the performance in the triple jump, and (2) to determine the effects that different arm techniques have on fulfilling the functions of the arms during the support phases of the triple jump. Thirteen elite male triple jumpers were used as the subjects. A direct linear transformation procedure with panning cameras was employed to collect three-dimensional coordinates data. A mathematical model was developed to compute the contributions of the actions of the free limbs to the linear and angular motions of the whole body during the support phases of the triple jump.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The actions of the free limbs were associated with the decrease in the horizontal velocity of the center of gravity of the whole body (G), the increase in the vertical velocity of G, and the change in the somersaulting angular momentum of the whole body about G during the support phases of the triple jump. However, in general, the actions of the free limbs were not significantly correlated with either the changes in the linear and angular motions of the whole body during the support phases of the triple jump or the performance in the triple jump.

The arm techniques have significant effect on the change in the velocity of G during the support phase of the hop. The actions of the arms in the alternate-arm technique caused less decrease in the horizontal velocity of G while creating the vertical velocity during the support phase of the hop than did the actions of the arms in the arm-and-half and double-arm techniques. The actions of the arms in the double-arm technique created more vertical velocity than did the actions of the arms in the other two arm techniques. The alternate-arm technique is recommended for the support phases of the hop and step. The double-arm technique is recommended for the support phase of the jump.
