The purpose of this study was to examine selected handcraft techniques, to update instructions of selected techniques to contemporary use and materials, and to illustrate ways in which these handcrafts can be incorporated into current clothing designs. Thirteen handcrafts were selected namely, card weaving, handweaving, ikat dyeing and weaving, tie-dyeing batik, discharge dyeing, silk screening, block printing, fabric painting, fabric embroidery, trapunto, applique, and reverse applique.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Instructions for executing these handcrafts were obtained from various literature sources and examined. Experiments concerning the handcrafts were performed to ascertain contemporary procedures and available materials suitable for execution and use in average situations. Contemporary instructions for a suitable method of executing each handcraft along with currently available materials were formulated. These procedures were followed in the preparation, and completion of the handcrafts and finished apparel items. Photographs were made of the apparel items for illustrative purposes and inclusion in the manuscript.
