Thesis (Ph.D.)--Georgia Institute of Technology, 1997.
Cross-docking operation that moves items from receiving dock to shipping dock directly is introduced and two major categories of distribution systems, load-driven and schedule-driven systems, with cross-docking operations are defined. Network design models that locate cross-docking centers and allocate flow through the centers are developed for these systems. The models differ from the conventional distribution system design models by planning discrete transportation units on each link of the network. The network design models for load-driven systems are presented in the context of automobile delivery systems. These models have the similar characteristics of the Uncapacitated Facility Location models that LP solves to integer optimal solutions or with very few branch and bound nodes. The models solve real world size problems in reasonable CPU times. The network design models for schedule-driven systems are presented in the context of US Postal Service First Class Mail delivery problem. Due to the computation difficulties of this formulation, an optimization-based heuristic is developed. The heuristic produces close to optimal solutions for the USPS problems with reasonable CPU times. A lagrangian relaxation is also developed to improve lower bounds of the optimal solutions to ensure the quality of the heuristic solutions.
