After reviewing the current literature and the Korean expatriate's core competency models of two leading Korean global corporations, this study developed five competency areas. These areas were language, cross-cultural, job, leadership, and family. Different types of competencies were classified as subcategories in each area.

After the analysis of the questionnaire, this study found differences between the existing level of competency (ELC) and the required level of competency (RLC) among Korean expatriates in a Korean global corporation. The results of this study identified problems that were unique to Korean expatriate training programs and suggested ways to develop effective pre-dispatch Korean expatriate training programs. This study also identified the areas that had priority over other areas in the minds of Korean expatriates who utilized Korean expatriate training programs. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed according to the number of years each participant had worked as an expatriate and the working region.
